Turns mana pool and elapsed time into AP

  • Spellslinger's Shoes
  • Rod of Ages
  • Archangel's Staff
  • Rabadon's Deathcap
  • Infinity Orb
  • Oceanid's Trident

When the enemy has shield-granting champions and the game looks long

Rod of Ages' Veteran adds one stack every 35 seconds, reaching 150 HP, 300 Mana and 40 AP at ten stacks. Archangel's Staff converts that pool through Awe, which grants AP equal to 1% of max Mana, and Rabadon's Deathcap raises AP by a further 30%. Oceanid's Trident's Lethal Weapon cuts the durability of shields an enemy champion gains for 3 seconds once you deal ability damage to them. The cut reaches 45% with area of effect abilities and 60% with single target ones.

Ryze Strengths

  • High sustained and AoE magic damage in the late game
  • Long-range team teleport with Ult

Ryze Weaknesses

  • ×Heavy mana costs and weak combat early
  • ×Short range forces him into dangerous distances to deal damage

Early Game

Early on, mana costs are heavy and your combat power is low. Buy Tear first and focus on farming and stacking. Against harass, keep trades minimal with Skill 3 into Skill 2. This is a phase to endure.

Mid Game

Once your core items come together, your waveclear speeds up considerably. Shove side lanes quickly and use Ult to rotate faster into skirmishes. That supports your team's macro play.

Late Game

With the synergy of your passive and items complete, you become a hyper-carry with both sustained damage and burst. Catching a group with the Skill 3 into Skill 1 bounce chunks the whole clump at once.

Teamfights

To cover your short range, stay right behind your frontline and combo enemies in the order they approach. Use Ult with a wide view, either to move the whole team into position or to escape a bad spot.

⚠️ Common Mistakes

Casting skills out of combo order

Mashing skills without thinking about combo order costs you a lot of damage. If you do not follow Skill 3 with Skill 1, you miss the bonus damage from consuming Flux and the movement speed bonus. That puts you far behind in trades. Always cycle skills around Skill 3 into Skill 1 or Skill 2 into Skill 1, and from Lv5 use Ult to roam and move the game along.

Base Stats Base HP: 660 → 630 Base AR: 40 → 37 Rune Prison Damage: 70/110/150/190 + 65% AP + 4% bonus mana → 50/90/130/170 + 55% AP + 3% bonus mana Ryze has been riding high since Archangel's Staff and the other mage items were reworked. Lower base HP and armor make him easier to shove around in the early skirmishes, and Rune Prison loses on all three fronts — flat damage, AP ratio and mana ratio — so it takes longer to reach the mana-stacking payoff he is built around. Fall behind early and the comeback is much harder.

Base Stats Base AD: 58 → 54 Overload Bonus Movement Speed after cast: 30%/35%/40%/45% → 20%/27.5%/35%/42.5% Base Damage: 80/105/130/155 → 70/95/120/145 Ryze loses 4 base AD, making his early last-hitting and auto-attack trades a little shakier. Overload drops 10 base damage at every rank and, just as importantly, 10% of its movement speed burst at rank 1. Since Ryze uses that speed to hold spacing while he keeps casting, the change hurts both his escapes and his engages. Rank 4 only loses 2.5%, so the more he ranks the ability the closer he gets to his old mobility.

Adjust
Overload Targeting logic for the Spell Flux → Overload combo (Skill 3 → Skill 1) has been adjusted. When the two are chained in quick succession, Overload (Skill 1) now prioritises targets marked by Spell Flux (Skill 3). Chaining the two quickly could send Overload at an unmarked enemy instead, wasting the combo. It now lands on the intended target, so rushing the inputs no longer costs damage. Ryze lives on cycling this combo, and cutting out even one dropped cast changes how his trades resolve. No values move here, so his ceiling is the same — what improves is how often the damage he aimed for actually arrives.
